Orange Peel Candles

It happens all the time: you’ve been running around town, picking up last minute items to make sure your party will be spectacular. Guests are set to arrive in 10 minutes, and you realize—you forgot the candles. This last-minute trick will not only save the moment, but it may even steal the show.

  • You’ll Need:
  • Orange
  • Knife
  • Spoon
  • Olive or vegetable oil
  • Lighter or match
  • Step 1

Figure out which end of your orange sits the flattest as this will be the base of your candle. Cut the orange in half horizontally.

  • Step 2

Remove the top of the orange.

  • Step 3

Using a spoon (or your thumb) gently separate the orange from the remaining peel without breaking through the middle. Carefully remove the rest of the orange, keeping the center stem, or pith, inside (this will become the wick of your candle).

  • Step 4

The bottom of the orange and pith should remain.

  • Step 5

Pour olive oil into the orange, leaving just the top of the pith exposed.

  • Step 6

Dip the top of the pith in the olive oil for a few seconds. Light up your candle!

  • Tip:

You may need to try lighting your wick a few times; if the flame is small, at first give it a few minutes, it will get bigger.
